A few months ago, Jamey Giddens at Daytime Confidential published a post that captured the attention of many of us Guiding Light and P&G soap fans. He had a great suggestion: There should be a GL reboot, and a network like Netflix or Amazon would be a great space to do it.
I agree there is still spark, and still interest, in GL and in the Springfield stories. I’d love to see a limited-run series, or even a few two-hour Hallmark movies catching us up on the characters.
Giddens laid out a very comprehensive story for his dream reboot.
I was inspired and started to outline a bit of my own story bible. Then I realized that the questions — and suggestions — that I had were really bigger than any particular plot point.
What does a reboot of a classic show look like? What do you bring to the forefront?
And in a streamlined 21st century serial format, one that happens in the freedom of a space like Amazon or Netflix, what kinds of stories do we tell?
How could the creative forces behind a reboot honor the history of GL, and yet bring fresh new story (or underused characters/ideas from previous story) to the forefront?
It’s one that I’m still thinking about, and I’ll be blogging more about it in the days and weeks to come.
